About Mysore Style
The Ashtanga Yoga method is built around the "Mysore Style" class, named after the city of Mysore, India, where yoga was taught and continues to be taught by Sharath Jois as well as in traditional Ashtanga Yoga schools around the world. Click here to learn more about Ashtanga Yoga
In Mysore Class, the student is taught a sequence of postures through one-on-one instruction. The correct movements, breathing, and other aspects of the practice are learned gradually, in a step-by-step process accessible to anyone. This method allows each student time to practice and memorize what they have learned before adding more. Expect gentle hands on adjustments, form an experienced teacher, to correct alignment and deepen postures. Students are able to practice independently and at their own pace while surrounded by the energy and inspiration of other students in the room. The main teacher and assistants are able to work with each student individually. Initially, students may require more attention, but as they become proficient in their practice, they are allowed more independence, receiving adjustments and assistance only when required.

Mysore Room Etiquette
- Please respect and follow the traditional Ashtanga method as taught by Yoga Shala of San Antonio. Please do not add, skip or in other ways deviate from the traditional Ashtanga sequence of yoga asanas unless acknowledged or requested by your teacher.
- If you do not know the sequence or if following the traditional method is not possible for you, either talk to your teacher or request guidance.
- On your first day please practice only Primary Series.
- Please leave waters outside the room. In Ashtanga yoga, we use breathe only through the nose engaging the throat to create an internal heat and by drinking water during practice it prevents that heat and puts the internal fire out.
- Respect your limits. Acknowledge that your body and mind will feel different every day; listen to what your body tells you and practice in your own time following your own breath.
- Practice with care and consideration towards yourself and others.
- Please refrain from assisting other practitioners.
- Refrain from eating at least 2 hours prior to your practice. Drink plenty of water after your practice.
- Personal hygiene is an integral part of practicing yoga. Please ensure that you and your gear are clean.
- If you feel emotionally upset during or after a yoga session (joy, sadness, irritation, etc.) then accept the feelings and bid them welcome. If this feels difficult, you are welcome to speak to your teacher about it after class.
